Prayer life of School

‘I used to believe that prayer changes things, but now I know that prayer changes us, and we change things’ – Mother Teresa

Prayer plays a vital role in the daily life of St. Richard’s Catholic Primary School. The Catechism of the Catholic Church describes prayer as “the raising up of the heart and mind to God” — an act of praising Him, thanking Him, and seeking His blessings.

At St. Richard’s, children are guided from the very start of their journey in the Early Years Foundation Stage, and throughout their time with us, to develop in traditional prayer and to share their own prayers. These prayers take many forms, including thanksgiving, praise, petition, and penance. We emphasize the value of cultivating a meaningful prayer life, which strengthens their Faith and deepens their understanding of God and His Church.

We have a  range of prayer and reflection spaces around the school for children to use:

  • Mary Altar in the Forest Room – for prayers of intercession, where children can place their prayers with Mary, who takes them to God.

  • Jubilee Focus Area – reflecting the Year of Hope (more information to follow).

  • Prayer Garden – an outdoor space for quiet reflection.

  • Hall Altar  – for whole-school prayer gatherings.

In addition, each class has a dedicated prayer space, allowing children to engage with different types and forms of prayer as they progress through the school:

  • Nursery: Praying for our family and friends

  • Reception: Praying for our community

  • Year 1: Praying for our country, the land, and creation

  • Year 2: Praying for the world

  • KS2: Exploring different forms of prayer, including thanksgiving, confession, and more

These prayer spaces  help children experience and understand the many ways we can connect with God in daily life.
