  • Budding  Entrepreneurs of the Future

    Wed 08 Sep 2021

Our Year 3 children have taken part in an exciting program to learn about how business works and to prepare them for an exciting future as Entrepreneurs.  The Virgin Money project works by developing leadership, team- working, problem solving and money management.

All of the Year 3 children, with the support of their teachers  designed their own business ideas.  These included a slime shop, sweet shop, personalised pencil cases, a school magazine and even customized face masks.  Each child started with just £5, giving them £150 as a class, but following their advertising campaign and successful shops they turned this into £457! A massive 200% profit.  Look out for these future Entrepreneurs with this early start they could be the Richard Bransons of the future.

  • CAFOD publish the great News about our Live Simply Award

    Fri 19 Mar 2021 J Carr

Despite lockdown restrictions St Richard’s Primary School in Skelmersdale has received a LiveSimply award for its efforts to reduce waste, recycle and improve the environment both close to home and around the world.

Championed by overseas development charity CAFOD, the award was presented to pupils and staff on February 3rd 2021.

St Richard’s Primary School implemented a number of exceptional projects that highlighted the importance of caring for creation and community, including making strong links with the local neighborhood, providing food hampers and delivering cards.

Justine Silcock, a LiveSimply Assessor from CAFOD shares how the message of LiveSimply had a positive effect on one of families in the Skelmersdale community.

“Living simply made them look at things a little differently. They planted flowers and seeds in their garden to attract the bees, and recycled milk containers into bird houses and bird feeding stations. The garden turned into a wonderful space for them to enjoy watching nature and spending time as a family”.

Staff and pupils collated photos of activities expressing their appreciation of nature and the joy of caring for each other, by using them to create a beautiful LiveSimply display, including the famous quote from Pope Francis: “To live simply is not a lesser life or one lived with less intensity. On the contrary, it is a way of living life to the full.”

Reflecting on why the school was inspired to aim for the LiveSimply Award Mrs Carr, RE Coordinator, says:

“Our children are dedicated to serving the local and wider communities and working towards this award was a way of demonstrating just what a difference they make to others”.

“We are also privileged to have such supporting families whose generosity and care enables us all to live out this call by living simply, living sustainably and living in solidarity with people who are in need in many different ways.”

Siobhan Farnell, CAFOD’s Community Participation Coordinator, says:

“It is wonderful to see St Richard’s Catholic Primary School achieve the LiveSimply Award, they have really embraced caring for nature and supporting communities both locally and our wider global family too.

“What is also inspiring is to hear how some of the pupils’ families have embraced the LiveSimply ethos at home too. We all have a part to play in developing a better world and St Richard’s are leading by example, well done to them all.”

  • LiveSimply

    Thu 28 Jan 2021

We at St Richard’s are taking part in the CAFOD Live Simply Challenge and invite you, as staff, governors, parents, children and community to join us.

Central to our faith is that God created each and every one of us with free will and the power to choose.  We are accountable for our actions and in order to experience freedom, we must exercise responsibility.

We are setting monthly challenges to encourage us to look at our personal responsibility for making choices what will enable us to live simply, sustainably and in solidarity with the poor.  These challenges will help us to think globally and make a decision to take simple steps to bring about change for the better.

    November

I will live simply by saving energy.

I promise to turn the lights off when I leave a room and not leave any electrical equipment on standby.

    December

I will live simply by making a change for the poor in my area.

I promise to support the school’s campaign for Community Gift Day to help less fortunate families enjoy a happier Christmas.

    January

I will live simply by Recycling.

I promise to find out more about recycling in my local area and to encourage my family and school to recycle more.  I promise to contact my local councillor to highlight the lack of cardboard and plastic recycling facilities for school.

    February

I will live simply by Praying.

This year has been named the year of St Joseph and we want to show how we can be loving, tender and caring to others through our prayers.

I promise to pray for people who do not have a safe place to sleep or enough food to eat; to accept and welcome others as they are, without exception.

    March

I will live simply by becoming more aware of Fairtrade.

I will encourage my family and friends to buy Fairtrade products.

    April

I will live simply by making new friends.

I promise to make an effort to make a new start by getting to know people better and to tell my friends how much I love, appreciate and care for them.

    May

I will live simply by appreciating what I have.

I promise to look after all of my things, treat them with respect, tidy up, put things away and help my family.

    June

I will live simply by walking or cycling to school.

I promise to try to walk or cycle to school more often rather than go by car.

    July

I will live simply by persevering.

I have tried hard to make a difference in my life for others.  I know that these small changes can help to make a better world for everyone.
